About long
The project behind this jewelry brand stems from two deep passions I’ve had for a long time: the craft of working with clay, on one hand, and my interest in emancipatory struggles, on the other. Du Rébecca brings these two worlds together.
Everything is possible, nothing is forbidden. Beauty itself is questioned, and at least we have the freedom to view it beyond its conventional norms. The process itself almost feels transcendent. It provides a sort of escape from everyday life, helping us deconstruct everything we’ve been taught, leaving us stronger and more capable of making our own choices.
For me, it’s truly a means of affirmation accessible to everyone. Perhaps even more so for women, a way to take control of our actions and ideas, to have free will, to assert ourselves without seeking validation.
Since I was young, I’ve always been crafting, whether painting or exploring other forms, but it is ceramics that I love the most. It’s a complete process: 3D sculpture, colors, the many transformations of the material (liquid, paste, leather-hard, dry and raw, then fired... the unpredictability of the firing process, multiple firings, the way colors and materials adhere, and the surprises when opening the kiln…).
Ceramics makes you humble; you never stop learning, never stop making mistakes. That’s both what excites and frustrates me the most.
I have mainly worked with earthenware since I was ten, but for the past year, I’ve started exploring porcelain.
Why choose porcelain?
After experimenting with six different types of clay, I decided to keep only white porcelain for my jewelry.
I have both a technical reason and a heartfelt reason for this.
The technical reason is that it is complicated to manage multiple clays simultaneously. It takes up to three firings for a single piece of jewelry, and if different clays are used, each one fires at a different temperature. That could mean scheduling up to five separate firings.
Additionally, I use a special kind of porcelain, known as "paper porcelain," which is mixed with cellulose. This paper burns away during firing at 1280°C, leaving a much lighter, less dense porcelain. This is ideal for creating jewelry that’s not too heavy, making it the perfect material for my pieces.
The heartfelt reason is that porcelain carries an image of delicacy and preciousness. Yet paradoxically, it is one of the most durable and resistant clays available. I love this contrast.
This societal concern has been with me for over ten years, and it has only intensified as violent rhetoric has become more normalized and widespread.
So, I simply want to do something small to express everything that’s positive in a world where people are free to choose who they are, who they love, and what they do with their bodies and personalities. A world where we pay more attention to others and show more empathy, a world with less social determinism.
It’s not that complicated; it seems simple to me.
I believe that if so many people don’t feel represented or are unhappy with the norms imposed upon them, then perhaps those norms are simply wrong. Let’s evolve them, everyone stands to benefit.
